Tools
All tools are read-only. None of them write data, call an AI model or verify that an authority is still good law.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
search | Simple keyword search over Indian judgments. Returns document IDs, titles and source URLs. Double quotes keep a phrase together. |
search_legal_documents | Filtered search over judgments or legislation: court, judge, case type, parties, date ranges, acts and provisions, citations, and all/any/phrase/proximity text conditions. Paginates with next_offset. |
search_by_neutral_citation | Finds judgments by an exact neutral citation. |
fetch | Returns indexed text and metadata for an ID returned by a search tool, with its source URL. |
get_search_options | Lists exact stored values for courts, case types, judges, authors, acts and provisions, so filters match what's indexed. |
Example prompts
- “Find Supreme Court judgments on anticipatory bail under Section 438 CrPC from 2020 onwards.”
- “Look up the judgment with neutral citation 2020 INSC 106 and summarise what the court held.”
- “Which Delhi High Court judgments discuss ‘legitimate expectation’ in tender disputes? Give me the source links.”
- “Show Section 34 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 and recent judgments that apply it.”
Limits and good practice
- Coverage: Indian Supreme Court, High Court and tribunal judgments, and central legislation, as indexed by LawLens.
- Excerpts:
fetchreturns indexed text, which may not be the complete judgment. Open the source URL to read the original. - No legal verification: a search result shows that a document exists in the index. It doesn't prove the authority is still valid, and an empty result doesn't prove a citation is wrong.
- Rate limits: tool calls are rate limited per client. If you see a “Too many requests” error, wait a minute and retry.
- What to send: only what's needed for public-source research. Don't include confidential client material, privileged communications or credentials in your questions.
Privacy
LawLens receives the tool inputs your MCP client sends, such as search keywords, filters and document IDs, and returns public legal sources. The connector doesn't request your LawLens account, chat history or files. Section 2(c) of the LawLens Privacy Policy describes how MCP requests are processed, logged and retained. Use of the connector is subject to the Terms of Service.
